Madison Magazine header that says BITE

November 1, 2022

If our November cover story didn't make it clear, we're all about snacks this month at Madison Magazine: where to find them, how to pair them and even pinpointing the snack that fits your zodiac. My sign is Pisces which means that Canteen's TajΓn-dusted Duritos (or duros de harina) should be my snack of choice, according to editor Andrea Behling's astrological divination.

My mom wasn't so convinced this was the right snack. After her first glance through the snacks story, she had an important question for me: "Where's the popcorn?" To be sure, popcorn always earned the top-shelf snack spot in my family. We had a Stir Crazy popcorn machine that would stir the popcorn kernels through hot oil and pop them into a domed lid that doubled as a bowl. I've met other popcorn families, each fierce about their chosen method of making popcorn. We were devoted so steadfastly to the Stir Crazy method that my dad once drove around to all the secondhand shops in town trying to find me a functioning Stir Crazy for my birthday a few years back.

No matter how you pop homemade popcorn, a variety of toppings are always due. It could be salt, nutritional yeast, fancy popcorn salts, butter or — my personal favorite — chili lime salt. Canteen's Duritos are also dusted in chili lime salt. Coincidence? Behling's prediction for Pisces was pretty spot on after all.

Happy Snacking!

Snacks take the spotlight
The snack shows up on spontaneous nights, at casual outings and on the route along the way. It has nothing to prove other than how tasty an impromptu bite can be. And Madison has an impressive lineup of them.

Next level bar snacks
It's not hard to find a basket of potato chips, pretzels or pub mix on the counter at a local bar in Madison. Even a few of our favorite fine dining spots and supper clubs have great bar stool lineups, but they kick the classics up a notch.
